Second-Hand vs New: How Much You Really Save Buying a Pre-Owned Phone or Console

28 September 2026

Everyone knows second-hand is cheaper than new. What's less obvious is just how much cheaper it can be — and whether you're actually giving anything up for the saving. When it comes to phones and games consoles, the honest answer is: you usually save a lot, and you give up very little.

Why new tech loses value so quickly

The moment a new phone or console leaves the shop, it stops being "new" — and its price drops accordingly. Phones in particular lose a big slice of their value in the first year or two, not because anything's wrong with them, but because a newer model has come out and the spotlight has moved on. Consoles follow a similar pattern, especially once the next generation is announced.

That drop in value is a cost somebody has to absorb. When you buy new, it's you. When you buy pre-owned, the first owner has already taken that hit — and you get a device that works just as well for a noticeably lower price.

Where the savings actually come from

It's worth being clear about what you're paying for when you buy brand new. A big part of the price is simply the "newest model" premium — the launch-day hype, the marketing, and the privilege of having it first. Very little of that premium translates into a better experience day to day.

A phone that's a year or two old will still take great photos, run the apps you use, and last you a good while yet. A console from the current or previous generation still plays a huge library of games. In most cases, the difference between new and nearly-new is the box it came in — not what it can actually do.

That's why pre-owned phones and consoles typically sell for a fraction of their original price. The exact saving depends on the model, its age and its condition, but it's often the difference between stretching your budget and having money left over.

What about the risks?

The usual worry with second-hand tech is the unknown: is the battery shot, is there hidden damage, what happens if it stops working next month? Buying privately from a stranger online, those are fair concerns — you often have no comeback if something goes wrong.

Buying from a proper shop is a different story. Every phone and console we sell in our Blackpool and Fleetwood stores is checked over, tested and graded before it goes on the shelf, so you know exactly what you're getting. And it comes with a 12-month warranty, which takes most of the gamble out of it. If something isn't right, you've got a real shop to come back to — not a seller who's stopped answering messages.

Consoles: where pre-owned really shines

Games consoles are one of the best examples of pre-owned value. Hardware is built to last, and a well-looked-after console will run for years. Buying one pre-owned means you can put the money you've saved towards games and controllers — which is where the fun actually is.

It's also the easiest way into retro gaming. Older consoles aren't sold new any more, so pre-owned is the only way to get hold of them, and they're more popular than ever with people who want to replay the games they grew up with (or share them with their kids).

Making your money go even further

There are a couple of simple ways to stretch the saving further still. If you've got an old phone, tablet or console sitting unused at home, bring it in — trading it in or selling it through a buy-back puts money straight back towards your next device. It's also a lot better than leaving it to gather dust in a drawer.

And if you'd rather not pay for everything in one go, our Easy-Pay option lets you reserve a pre-owned item with a deposit and pay the rest off over 12 weeks — with no credit checks and no interest. It's a sensible alternative to a long phone contract or putting it on a card.

The bottom line

Buying pre-owned isn't about settling for less. For most people, a tested, warrantied, nearly-new phone or console does everything a brand new one would — for considerably less money. You skip the steepest part of the price drop, you get a device that's been properly checked, and you keep a perfectly good piece of tech in use rather than letting it go to waste. It's good for your wallet and better for the planet too.
